Kollmorgen 7201-STEP
Product Brief: The 7201-STEP is an interface/indexer plug-in board or configured base unit for the DigiFAS 7000 amplifier chassis, providing step-and-direction input acceptance and local indexer (motion program) capability for stepper or brushless motor control. DigiFAS 7000 main power stage accepts 3× 80–480 VAC and drives stepper or BLDC motors; 7201-STEP handles command interpretation — accepts step pulses (up to several MHz) and direction signals, and can execute stored motion profiles (indexing, homing, cam tables) from onboard memory.
Detailed content
Function: Accepts STEP/DIR pulses (differential RS-422 or single-ended 5 V TTL, up to 4 MHz typical) and converts to internal trajectory; also provides standalone indexer mode with programmable position tables, homing sequences, and I/O-triggered moves.
Compatible Power Stage: DigiFAS 7000 series amplifier (e.g., DF720x main unit)
Step Input Characteristics: Optically isolated or differential RS-422; minimum pulse width typically 100 ns (check firmware); polarity selectable
Direction Input: Optically isolated / differential, sampled on step edge
Local Indexer Features: Programmable acceleration/deceleration (S-curve / trapezoidal), multiple position registers, home search routines, electronic gear (limited), programmable digital I/O linkage
Communication for Config: RS-232 or RS-485 to PC running Kollmorgen configuration software
Operating Temperature: 0 °C to +50 °C
Power Requirement: Derived from DigiFAS 7000 backplane (+5 V / +24 V logic)
Indicators: LEDs for Power, Fault, Ready, Step Activity
Mounting: Plugs into DigiFAS 7000 main unit control slot or is integral to configured 7201-STEP unit
Applicable Industries: Stepper-driven indexing tables, cut-to-length feeders, bottle cappers, label applicators, conveyor positioners using microstepping drives
Installation Requirements: Install in DigiFAS 7000 chassis per orientation key; connect step/dir source observing differential pair wiring (A+/A–, B+/B–); shield cable grounded at source end; set step polarity and pulse active edge via DIP or software.
Usage Notes: 7201-STEP is part of a legacy modular drive system; for new designs use Kollmorgen stepper drives (P70530 etc.) or AKD with stepper motor; ensure step pulse width meets minimum spec of drive — excessive jitter on step line can cause lost steps; verify indexer program is downloaded before attempting standalone moves; keep step/dir wires separated from motor power cables.
