Kollmorgen S74801-NANANA
Product Series: S700 Series — Single-Turn Absolute Encoders
Product Introduction:
The S74801-NANANA is a single-turn absolute optical encoder from Kollmorgen’s S700 product family. The “NANANA” suffix indicates a custom configuration with no shaft, no flange, and no connector — designed for OEM integration into customer-specific mechanical assemblies. It provides high-resolution absolute position feedback within one revolution.

Material Composition:
- Code Disc: Glass (chromium-on-glass, high-contrast pattern)
- Light Source: Infrared LED (long life, > 50,000 hours)
- Photodetector Array: CMOS sensor with ASIC signal processing
- Housing: Aluminum alloy (anodized)
- Cable Exit: Cable gland M12 (when connector is added; NANANA = no gland)
Structural Features:
- No shaft — OEM provides custom coupling
- No flange — OEM provides custom mounting
- No connector — OEM wires directly to PCB
- Compact encoder head — Ø48mm × 25mm (approx.)
- Through-hole or blind-hole mounting per OEM design
Working Principle:
The encoder uses a glass code disc with 128 transparent/opaque lines arranged in a Gray code pattern. An infrared LED illuminates the disc, and a CMOS photodetector array reads the light pattern. The ASIC converts the optical signal into a digital absolute position word transmitted via BiSS-C, EnDat, or Hiperface protocol. Since it is single-turn, the position value resets to zero after each full revolution. The drive tracks total revolutions via velocity integration for multi-turn capability.
Key Advantages:
- True absolute position — no homing required after power loss
- High resolution — 512 counts/rev for smooth motion
- BiSS-C protocol — daisy-chain capable, reduced wiring
- NANANA configuration — maximum OEM design flexibility
- IP67 capable — suitable for harsh environments
Applicable Industries:
- OEM Motor Integration (built into custom motor designs)
- Robotics Joint Feedback
- Medical Imaging (CT/MRI gantries)
- Antenna Positioning Systems
- Camera Stabilization (gimbals)
Installation Requirements:
- Mount encoder head with custom bracket — concentricity to motor shaft < 0.02mm
- Air gap to code disc: 0.5mm ± 0.1mm (critical for signal quality)
- Wiring: Direct solder or custom harness to drive (BiSS-C: CLK, DATA, +5V, GND)
- Shield cable — ground shield at drive end only
- Alignment: Code disc must be parallel to sensor plane (< 0.1° tilt)
Usage Precautions:
- Do not exceed 8000 RPM — code disc may shatter at higher speeds
- Keep code disc clean — oil/dust causes position errors
- Do not apply axial force on shaft — NANANA has no shaft; mounting must handle loads
- ESD protection required during handling — CMOS sensor is ESD-sensitive
- Do not expose to direct sunlight — affects optical signal
