Caterpillar 164-8940

Product Name: Caterpillar 164-8940 Electronic Communication Module
Overview: The 164-8940 is a Caterpillar electronic communication module used in Cat machine and engine control architectures. It manages data-link communication between engine control modules, machine controllers and service tools.

Detailed content

Technical Specifications: Module type is electronic communication/ECM interface. Communication uses Caterpillar Data Link and proprietary Cat electronic control messaging. Enclosure is heavy-duty sealed industrial electronic housing suitable for off-highway machinery. Operating temperature is -40 to +85 °C under Caterpillar heavy-duty ratings. Connectors are multi-pin sealed harness interfaces. Power and signal levels must follow the specific machine schematic and Cat Electronic Technician configuration.
Functional Features: Routes diagnostic and operational data between controllers, supports Cat ET service communication, maintains data-link handshaking with engine and transmission ECMs, resists vibration and moisture in off-highway environments, replaces legacy communication faults without full harness redesign when matched to the machine software.
Application Scenarios: Caterpillar excavators, mining trucks, wheel loaders, dozers, generator-set controls, marine and industrial Cat engines, fleet machines requiring electronic diagnostics and ECM networking.
Materials and Structure: Sealed thermoplastic/metalized electronic enclosure, vibration-damped mounting tabs, gold- or tin-plated sealed connectors, internal communication processor board with transient protection.
Working Principle: The module receives Cat Data Link messages from engine, transmission and auxiliary controllers. It validates addresses, forwards diagnostic parameters to service tools and returns configuration commands to connected ECMs. Fault codes, calibration data and live sensor values are exchanged over the sealed harness without external conversion hardware.
Installation Requirements: Install using the machine-specific mounting brackets and sealed connector kit. Inspect harness pins for corrosion, pushed-back contacts and moisture before connection. Flash the correct machine software file with Caterpillar Electronic Technician before first operation. Verify battery isolation during physical installation.
Usage Precautions: Never connect or disconnect the harness while battery power is applied. Do not substitute unrelated Cat communication part numbers without software compatibility verification. Keep the module below its certified temperature and vibration envelope. Use ESD protection because internal logic boards are sensitive to static discharge.
