Product Name
SCALANCE X212-2 managed Industrial Ethernet switch.
Product Introduction
This managed switch delivers high port density with copper RJ45 interfaces and multimode fiber uplinks. It is built for plant-wide PROFINET networks, large machine cells and redundant industrial Ethernet topologies requiring long-distance optical backbone links.

Rated supply is 24 V DC with operating range 18 V DC to 32 V DC. Maximum current consumption is 0.33 A. Rated power loss is 7.92 W at 24 V DC. Power input fuse is 1.1 A / 33 V. Signaling contact is 24 V DC maximum, 0.1 A maximum. Management interfaces include Web-Based Management, CLI, SNMP v1/v2/v3, DCP, LLDP, HTTPS, TFTP and port mirroring. Redundancy functions include MRP redundancy manager, HRP redundancy manager, HRP standby and PRP passive/listening modes. PROFINET IO diagnostics and I&M data are supported. C-PLUG removable configuration storage is optional. Protection rating is IP30. Dimensions are 120 mm width, 125 mm height and 124 mm depth. Net weight is 1.2 kg. Operating temperature is -40 °C to +60 °C. Storage and transport temperature is -40 °C to +70 °C. Relative humidity is up to 95% at 25 °C non-condensing. Mounting supports 35 mm DIN rail, S7-300 rail and wall mounting; S7-1500 rail is not supported.
Functional Features
The switch provides managed Layer 2 switching, VLAN segmentation, QoS prioritization, port diagnostics, packet statistics, error counters, email traps, DHCP client, SNTP time synchronization, SSH security, PROFINET IO alarms and redundant ring control. The integrated redundancy manager supports fast reconfiguration for MRP and HRP rings. C-PLUG enables configuration backup and rapid hardware replacement.
Application Scenarios
Large factory Ethernet backbones, PROFINET I/O clusters, automotive assembly lines, machining workshops, process automation substations, cabinet-to-cabinet multimode fiber links, high-EMI areas and hazardous-area Zones 2 projects with appropriate system approvals.
Performance Parameters
All RJ45 ports provide 10/100 Mbps auto-negotiation. BFOC ports provide 100 Mbps multimode optical transmission. Documented multimode fiber distances reach several kilometers depending on fiber type, attenuation and Siemens optical budget; many X212-2 references use up to 3 km for general BFOC configurations and up to 5 km for selected 50/125 µm or 62.5/125 µm links. MRP/HRP ring reconfiguration supports sub-second recovery in managed topologies. Reference MTBF is approximately 51 years under defined operating conditions.
Material Composition
Housing uses industrial metal or polycarbonate-glass composite according to production variant with IP30 protection. Internal circuits use FR-4 printed circuit boards, Ethernet switch controllers, RJ45 magnetics, BFOC optical transceivers and redundant-power conditioning components. Terminal blocks use tinned copper alloy.
Structural Characteristics
Compact rectangular body with front RJ45 ports, front BFOC ports, system and port LEDs, set button and error-signaling terminal. Separate power terminal block supports primary and redundant 24 V DC input. C-PLUG slot is provided for offline configuration storage. DIN-rail clip and wall-mount points are integrated in the chassis.
Working Principle
Incoming Ethernet frames are classified by the managed switching engine using MAC learning, VLAN rules and QoS priorities. PROFINET IO data exchanges cyclically with the controller and generates diagnostics through Web, SNMP, DCP and LLDP. MRP, HRP or PRP monitors ring or parallel-redundant links and reroutes traffic after a fault. BFOC transceivers perform optical-electrical conversion for noise-immune multimode fiber segments. The error contact reports power or system faults to external alarm circuits.
Installation Requirements
Mount inside a control cabinet on 35 mm DIN rail, S7-300 rail or wall bracket with adequate ventilation. Connect two independent 24 V DC supplies for redundancy; each supply must stay within 18 V DC to 32 V DC. Use shielded industrial RJ45 cables for copper ports. Use approved multimode BFOC patch cords and keep bend radius within fiber specifications. Insert C-PLUG only after firmware and configuration planning are completed. Bond the switch mounting surface to the cabinet protective-earth system according to EMC rules.
Usage Precautions
Verify BFOC transmit and receive orientation at both ends because optical ports do not auto-cross. Keep dust caps on unused optical ports and clean ferrules before mating. Do not operate above 60 °C or 95% non-condensing humidity. Save configuration to C-PLUG before maintenance swaps. Use managed VLAN, MRP or HRP planning in TIA Portal or Step 7 before commissioning. This product is discontinued for new projects; plan migration to a current SCALANCE successor where long-term procurement is required.
