NI CFP-1808
Product Name
National Instruments cFP-1808 Compact FieldPoint eight-slot Ethernet and serial network backplane.
Product Introduction
cFP-1808 is a network interface backplane for Compact FieldPoint I/O. It connects up to eight cFP I/O modules to Ethernet and serial hosts, enabling distributed measurement and control in rugged environments.
Detailed content
Technical Specifications
Backplane provides eight Compact FieldPoint module slots. Ethernet port is RJ-45 10/100 Mbps auto-negotiating. Serial port is DB-9 RS-232. Supported protocols include TCP/IP, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU or ASCII, Optomux, and OPC through compatible software. Power input is 11 to 30 VDC, isolated; recommended supply capacity is 20 W plus I/O module load. Power consumption is approximately 6.1 W plus about 1.1 W per typical I/O module. Operating temperature is -40 to 70°C. Storage temperature is -55 to 85°C. Relative humidity is 10 to 90% noncondensing.
Function Features
Automatic network configuration through NI Measurement & Automation Explorer, dual Ethernet and RS-232 diagnostic access, event-driven I/O communication, LED status indicators, and integration with LabVIEW or third-party Modbus clients.
Performance Parameters
Network throughput depends on protocol, number of I/O modules, and message rate. Ethernet 10/100 provides high-speed process data exchange; RS-232 provides diagnostic and legacy serial access. Shock rating is 50 g half-sine 3 ms and 30 g half-sine 11 ms. Random vibration is 5 grms from 10 to 500 Hz.
Material Composition
Industrial metal or ruggedized FieldPoint enclosure, isolated power circuitry, Ethernet magnetics, and conformal-coated boards where specified for harsh service.
Structure Features
Eight-slot backplane with RJ-45 Ethernet, DB-9 serial, power terminals, DIN or panel mounting provisions, and status LEDs. Module weight is approximately 1595 g.
Isolation and Safety
Continuous isolation is 250 Vrms, Measurement Category II, between module and backplane. Dielectric withstand is 2300 Vrms for 5 seconds. Product design targets IEC 61010-1, UL 61010-1, and CSA 61010-1 requirements.
Working Principle
The backplane supplies power and communication to each inserted cFP module. Ethernet or serial messages are parsed by the network processor, mapped to I/O registers, and exchanged with host software. Modbus, Optomux, or TCP modes are selected in configuration software.
Installation Requirements
Mount in a control cabinet or sealed enclosure for outdoor use. Use 11 to 30 VDC isolated power with sufficient current for all slots. Ground the shield and power common properly. For panel shock and vibration compliance, secure the chassis with recommended hardware.
Usage Notes
Confirm NI-FieldPoint driver and firmware compatibility before replacement. Set serial baud rate and node address according to existing network. Calculate total I/O module current before populating all eight slots. Avoid unpowered hot insertion of modules where the procedure requires de-energized maintenance.
