Woodward 9906-716

Product Overview: The 9906-716 is part of Woodward’s Hydraulic Amplifier family — a linear electro-hydraulic actuator designed to operate steam turbine control valves or valve racks. The integrated actuator is intended for use on mechanical-drive or generator-drive steam turbines, using a low-pressure hydraulic oil source (typically turbine lube oil) to provide its output shaft force. The Hydraulic Amplifier’s accuracy and resolution make it ideal for steam turbine valve control and related turbine speed and load control.

Detailed content

Working Principle: The Hydraulic Amplifier is a linear, pilot-operated, servo actuator. In pressure-input configurations, it works in conjunction with a modified Woodward PG governor. The governor’s hydraulic pressure output (proportional to prime mover load) controls a pilot valve plunger. The pilot valve directs high-pressure oil (from the turbine lube system or external pump) to a servo cylinder, producing the output shaft force. Single-acting or double-acting servo cylinders are available, with return springs providing decrease-fuel forces.

Structural Features:
  • Pilot-operated servo design
  • Single or double-acting servo cylinder options
  • Return spring for fail-safe operation
  • Integrated with Woodward PG governor (pressure-input version)
Application Scenarios: Mechanical-drive and generator-drive steam turbines, steam turbine control valves, valve rack positioning, turbine speed and load control.
Installation Requirements:
  • Mount per Woodward Hydraulic Amplifier manual (Manual 89015 for complete installation, operation, maintenance, and certification)
  • Connect low-pressure hydraulic oil supply (turbine lube oil or external pump, 100–500 psi)
  • Wire position demand signal (0–200 mA)
  • Ensure turbine lube oil system compatibility
Usage Precautions:
  • Prime mover must be equipped with an independent overspeed shutdown device
  • Overtemperature or overpressure shutdown device may also be required
  • Read entire manual and all related publications before installation, operation, or servicing
  • Practice all plant and safety instructions
  • Unauthorized modifications outside specified mechanical, electrical, or operating limits cause personal injury and/or property damage and void warranty
  • Observe ESD precautions: avoid synthetic clothing, do not touch PCB components except at edges, keep replacement PCBs in anti-static bags
  • Before disconnecting battery from a system using an alternator or battery-charging device, ensure the charging device is turned off
