Kollmorgen S7240F-NANANA

Product Introduction:
The S7240F-NANANA is a compact AC servo motor from Kollmorgen’s S72 product family with a 40 mm frame size and flange mounting configuration. The suffix breakdown: “F” = flange mount, “NA” = no brake (no holding brake), “NA” = no keyway (smooth shaft), “NA” = standard winding. This motor is designed for space-constrained applications requiring smooth shaft output and no holding brake.

Structural Features:

  • Compact 40 mm outer diameter cylindrical design
  • Front flange mounting with 4 bolt holes (M3)
  • Smooth shaft (no keyway) for friction-based or clamping hub connections
  • No holding brake for minimal inertia and fast response
  • Precision ball bearings (sealed)
  • Rear-mounted incremental encoder with 5-pin M12 connector

Material Composition:

  • Stator Core: Silicon steel laminations (0.2 mm thickness)
  • Rotor Magnets: Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB, N42SH grade)
  • Shaft: Stainless steel (AISI 303)
  • Housing: Aluminum alloy (6061-T6)
  • Bearings: Stainless steel sealed ball bearings
  • Windings: Class F insulation (155°C rating), copper wire

Working Principle:
Three-phase PMSM operation. The servo drive sends PWM-synthesized three-phase currents to the stator windings, creating a rotating magnetic field. The NdFeB permanent magnet rotor synchronously follows this field, producing torque. The incremental encoder provides relative position feedback (A/B quadrature + Z index) to the drive for velocity and position control. The smooth shaft eliminates backlash in coupling applications.

Functional Features:

  • Ultra-low rotor inertia (0.00003 kg·m²) for fastest acceleration
  • Smooth shaft eliminates keyway backlash
  • No brake reduces motor length and weight
  • Incremental encoder for cost-effective positioning
  • Compatible with AKD, AKD-P, and AKD2G drives

Advantages:

  • Smallest frame in S72 family (40 mm) for tight space integration
  • Zero-backlash smooth shaft ideal for precision coupling
  • Extremely low inertia enables highest acceleration rates
  • Lightweight at 0.38 kg
  • No brake reduces power consumption and heat generation

Applicable Industries:

  • Pick-and-place machines
  • Small robot joints
  • Medical device actuators
  • Optical equipment (lens positioning)
  • Semiconductor wafer handlers
  • Laboratory automation

Installation Requirements:

  • Mount using 4× M3 bolts on front flange (torque: 0.8 Nm)
  • Use clamping hub or friction coupling on smooth shaft (no set screws)
  • Align shaft to load within 0.02 mm TIR
  • Connect encoder cable via M12 connector (max 10 m recommended)
  • Ensure minimum 20 mm clearance around motor body for airflow

Usage Notes:

  • Do not use set screws on smooth shaft — use clamping hub only
  • Maximum continuous ambient temperature: 40°C
  • Do not exceed 3000 RPM continuous speed
  • Derate torque by 15% above 40°C ambient
