Kollmorgen S71201-US
Overview:
The S71201-US is a single-axis digital AC servo drive from the Kollmorgen S700 product family, designed for high-performance motion control applications requiring precise torque, velocity, and position regulation. The “US” suffix denotes United States market compliance, including NEMA-rated input and UL/cUL certification. The drive features advanced current-mode control with a 20 kHz servo update rate, delivering exceptional dynamic response for industrial automation, packaging, printing, and material handling systems

Structural Features:
- DIN-rail or chassis mounting capability
- Integrated heat sink with forced-air cooling (internal fan)
- Terminal blocks for power, motor, encoder, and I/O connections
- EtherCAT connector (RJ45) on front panel
- LED status indicators for power, fault, and ready states
Working Principle:
The drive operates on a closed-loop vector control (FOC — Field Oriented Control) architecture. It measures motor phase currents in real time, transforms them into the rotating d-q reference frame, and independently regulates torque-producing (q-axis) and flux-producing (d-axis) current components. The 20 kHz current loop ensures sub-millisecond torque response. Position and velocity loops run at 1 kHz (default), with an outer EtherCAT-synchronized distribution clock enabling multi-axis coordinated motion.
Advantages:
- 20 kHz current loop for superior dynamic stiffness
- EtherCAT real-time Ethernet for deterministic multi-axis coordination
- Integrated safety (STO, SS1, SLS, SLP, SOS) — no external safety relay required
- Compact form factor — fits in standard control cabinets
- Auto-tuning with Kollmorgen Automation Suite software
Applicable Industries:
Packaging machinery, printing presses, CNC machines, robotics, semiconductor equipment, textile machines, material handling conveyors.
Installation Requirements:
- Mount vertically or horizontally with adequate clearance (minimum 50 mm on all sides for airflow)
- Use shielded cable for encoder connections (maximum 10 m for incremental, 50 m for EnDat/Hiperface)
- Ground the drive chassis to protective earth (PE)
- Ensure input power has <5% voltage imbalance (3-phase) or proper single-phase sizing
Usage Precautions:
- Do not exceed the rated continuous current — use external braking resistor for high-inertia deceleration
- Verify encoder type matches drive configuration before power-on
- Enable STO before servicing motor or mechanical connections
- Derate output current by 1% per °C above 40°C ambient
