Kollmorgen QT-3832-C

Model Number: QT-3832-C

Product Introduction:
The QT-3832-C is a frameless (hollow-shaft) direct-drive torque motor from Kollmorgen’s QT product line. It is designed for direct integration into customer mechanical structures, eliminating the need for gearboxes, couplings, and bearings. The “3832” indicates a 3.8-inch outer diameter with 3.2-inch axial length, and “C” denotes a specific winding/sensor variant.

Structural Characteristics:

  • Frameless design — no housing, no shaft, no bearings
  • Stator and rotor supplied as separate components for direct customer integration
  • Hollow bore allows cable routing through the motor center
  • Epoxy-potted windings (optional) for harsh environments
  • Stainless steel laminations available for corrosive environments

Working Principle:
The stator is mounted directly into the customer’s mechanical structure. The rotor is mounted on the customer’s shaft or directly coupled to the load. When three-phase AC current is applied to the stator windings, a rotating magnetic field is generated. The permanent magnet rotor follows this field with zero backlash and zero mechanical transmission loss. Position feedback from the integrated encoder closes the servo loop.

Advantages:

  • Zero backlash — no gearbox needed
  • Zero maintenance — no bearings, no seals, no lubrication
  • Highest torque density in the QT product line for this size
  • Hollow shaft — allows integration of cables, sensors, or fluid lines through the bore
  • Class H insulation — operates at higher temperatures than standard motors

Applicable Industries:
Robotic joints (especially 6-axis and SCARA), gimbal systems, antenna positioning, medical imaging (CT/MRI gantries), aerospace actuation, semiconductor wafer stages, telescope mounts

Installation Requirements:

  • Stator OD press-fit tolerance: H7/s6 or custom interference fit per Kollmorgen drawing
  • Rotor bore press-fit tolerance: H7/s6 on customer shaft
  • Encoder alignment: Must be performed after mechanical integration — use Kollmorgen Workbench for zero-offset calibration
  • Thermal path: Ensure direct metal-to-metal contact between stator and customer heatsink
  • Cable routing: Use the hollow bore — minimum bend radius: 3× cable diameter

Usage Notes:

  • Do not machine the stator or rotor laminations — this will destroy magnetic properties
  • Maximum operating temperature: 155°C (winding) — Class H rating allows 180°C but derate above 155°C
  • Do not apply radial loads > 100 N — the motor has no bearing support
  • Use Kollmorgen QT Series Configurator for winding/feedback selection matching the drive
