Kollmorgen PMA230-1050B-02

Product Name: Kollmorgen PMA230 Series Frameless (Hollow-Shaft) AC Servo Motor

Product Type: Frameless Rotary Servo Motor — Direct-Drive Torque Motor

Model Number: PMA230-1050B-02

Model Series: PMA Series — Frameless Brushless Servo Motors

Detailed content

Product Introduction:
The PMA230-1050B-02 is a high-torque-density frameless AC servo motor designed for direct-drive applications where the motor is integrated directly into the mechanical structure, eliminating the need for couplings, gearboxes, or bearings. The hollow-shaft design allows wiring and cabling to pass through the center of the rotor.

Structural Features:

  • Frameless construction — No housing, no shaft, no bearings; motor is embedded into customer mechanical assembly.
  • Hollow rotor design — Central bore for cable routing and shaft pass-through.
  • Laminated stator core — Low-loss silicon steel laminations for reduced eddy current losses.
  • Rare-earth permanent magnet rotor — High-energy NdFeB magnets for maximum torque density.
  • Integral resolver feedback — Provides absolute position without battery backup.

Working Principle:
Three-phase AC current supplied to the stator windings generates a rotating magnetic field. The permanent magnet rotor locks to this field and rotates synchronously. The resolver mounted on the stator provides real-time rotor position feedback to the servo drive for closed-loop control.

Key Advantages:

  • Zero backlash — Direct-drive eliminates mechanical transmission losses.
  • Highest torque density in class — 16.5 Nm continuous in 230 mm OD.
  • Cable-through hollow shaft — Simplifies system integration in rotary joints and gimbals.
  • No maintenance bearings required — Customer supplies their own bearing system.

Applicable Industries:
Robotics (articulated joints), Antenna/radar positioning, Satellite gimbal systems, Semiconductor wafer handling, Medical imaging (CT/MRI gantries), Camera stabilization platforms.

Installation Requirements:

  • Motor must be press-fit or bolted into a precision-machined housing.
  • Customer must provide front and rear bearing support rated for full radial and axial loads.
  • Alignment tolerance: ≤ 0.02 mm TIR on bore concentricity.
  • Thermal interface: Use thermal compound or liquid cooling jacket for continuous operation above 70% rated torque.

Usage Precautions:

  • Do not exceed 4,500 RPM under any condition — rotor integrity is compromised above this limit.
  • Resolver cables must be shielded twisted-pair; route away from high-current power cables.
  • Operate only with Kollmorgen AKD or AKM-compatible servo drives.
  • Store in dry environment; NdFeB magnets are susceptible to corrosion if uncoated.
