Kollmorgen MMC-SD-8.0-460-D

Model Series: MMC Series (Modular Machine Controller / Servo Drive Platform)

Product Introduction:
The MMC-SD-8.0-460-D is a servo drive module from the MMC product family. The model code decodes as: MMC = Modular Machine Controller platform, SD = Servo Drive module, 8.0 = 8.0 kW continuous power rating, 460 = 460 VAC (3-phase) input voltage, D = configuration revision. The MMC platform is Kollmorgen’s modular, scalable drive architecture for multi-axis machine applications.

Configuration Code (D) Breakdown:

Code Meaning
D Standard configuration: EtherCAT + PROFINET, sin/cos + resolver feedback, 16/8 digital I/O, 2/2 analog I/O

Modular Architecture Features:

  • MMC platform allows mixing of servo drive modules, I/O modules, and safety modules in a single backplane
  • Hot-swappable modules for reduced downtime
  • Shared DC bus across modules for regenerative energy sharing
  • Up to 8 axes per MMC chassis

Control Modes:

  • Position Mode: EtherCAT CiA 402, Pulse/Direction, Analog
  • Velocity Mode: Analog ±10V, EtherCAT
  • Torque Mode: Analog ±10V, EtherCAT
  • Cyclic Synchronous Position (CSP): EtherCAT
  • Cyclic Synchronous Velocity (CSV): EtherCAT
  • Cyclic Synchronous Torque (CST): EtherCAT
  • Homing: Multi-step with index search

Advanced Features:

  • Auto-tuning with online inertia identification
  • 4 biquad notch filters for mechanical resonance suppression
  • Friction and feedforward compensation
  • Electronic gearing (up to 32:1)
  • Camming (up to 16 profiles)
  • Programmable trajectory generator (S-curve, trapezoidal, point-to-point)
  • Regenerative braking: energy returned to DC bus (shared across modules)

Advantages:

  • High power density: 8 kW in compact modular form factor
  • Scalable: add I/O, safety, and additional drive modules on same backplane
  • Multi-protocol: EtherCAT + PROFINET + EtherNet/IP native
  • Regenerative energy sharing across axes reduces braking resistor requirements
  • Up to SIL 2 / PL d functional safety

Applicable Industries:

  • Large CNC machining centers (5-axis)
  • Metal forming presses
  • Injection molding machines
  • Heavy-duty robotics
  • Printing presses (wide-format)
  • Wind turbine main drive
  • Mining equipment

Installation Requirements:

  • Mount in MMC chassis or standalone with minimum 150 mm clearance on all sides for airflow
  • DC bus capacitor: minimum 2,200 µF per drive (internal in MMC chassis)
  • Ground fault protection required on DC bus
  • Shielded encoder cables: maximum 20 m for sin/cos, 50 m for resolver
  • Earth ground: <1 Ω to machine ground
  • Ambient temperature derating: 100% at 25°C, 90% at 35°C, 70% at 45°C

Usage Notes:

  • Input voltage must remain within 380-480 VAC; do not connect to 500+ VAC systems
  • For multi-axis systems, use MMC chassis backplane for inter-module communication
  • Commission via Kollmorgen Automation Suite (KAS) over EtherCAT
  • Regenerative energy: if total regeneration exceeds 30% of bus capacity, add external braking resistor
