Kollmorgen MAG05-25041-00

Model Number: MAG05-25041-00

Product Introduction:
The MAG05-25041-00 is a high-resolution magnetic absolute encoder from Kollmorgen’s MAG product line. It uses magnetic sensing technology (Hall-effect or magnetoresistive) to read a multi-pole magnetic ring, providing absolute position feedback without contact. This encoder is designed for harsh environments where optical encoders would fail due to dust, oil, vibration, or moisture.

Structural Characteristics:

  • Non-contact magnetic sensing — no wear, infinite mechanical life
  • Sealed encoder head — no optical window to contaminate
  • Magnetic ring (target) is a separate component — mounted on motor shaft
  • Hollow shaft design — allows cable/tube routing through encoder center
  • M12 or M23 connector for signal output
  • Integrated temperature compensation circuitry

Working Principle:
multi-pole magnetized ring (target) is mounted on the motor shaft. The encoder head contains an array of Hall-effect or magnetoresistive sensors that read the magnetic field pattern. The electronics decode the field pattern into an absolute angle value for each revolution. A separate coarse counter tracks the number of revolutions, enabling multi-turn absolute position. The data is transmitted via BiSS-C or EnDat 2.2 to the servo drive.

Advantages:

  • Immune to dust, oil, water, vibration — no optical components
  • Infinite mechanical life — no contact, no wear
  • Absolute position on power-up — no homing sequence required
  • Wide temperature range: -40°C to +125°C — far exceeds optical encoders
  • Higher resolution than most resolvers at lower cost

Applicable Industries:
Off-highway vehicles, mining equipment, food & beverage (washdown), steel mills, paper machines, wind turbines, marine propulsion, outdoor robotics

Installation Requirements:

  • Magnetic ring (target) mount tolerance: Concentricity < 0.02 mm, axial runout < 0.05 mm
  • Air gap between target and sensor0.5 mm to 1.5 mm (critical — do not exceed 2.0 mm)
  • Encoder head mounting: Use 2× M3 set screws at 180° — torque 0.5 Nm max
  • Cable routing: Shielded twisted pair, minimum bend radius 30 mm
  • Do not expose to magnetic fields > 50 mT from external sources

Usage Notes:

  • Air gap is the most critical parameter — incorrect gap causes position errors or signal loss
  • Do not machine or demagnetize the target ring — permanent damage
  • Verify multi-turn counter resets correctly after 4096 turns
  • Use Kollmorgen Workbench MAG Configurator for resolution and protocol setup
