Working Principle:
The AKD drive receives a motion command via EtherCAT (or other fieldbus) from a motion controller (PLC, CNC, or PC-based controller). The drive’s internal DSP executes a three-loop cascade control architecture (current → velocity → position). The IGBT inverter switches at high frequency (PWM) to synthesize a sinusoidal current waveform for the motor. Feedback from the BiSS absolute encoder provides real-time rotor position for commutation and position control. Field-Oriented Control (FOC) ensures optimal torque production across the speed range.
Key Advantages:
- Compact footprint — high power density for cabinet space savings
- BiSS absolute encoder support — no homing required after power-up
- EtherCAT primary — deterministic, high-speed cyclic communication (125 μs cycle)
- Auto-tuning — built-in motor identification and tuning wizard
- Wide voltage range — 200–480 VAC, suitable for global installations
- SIL 2 capable — meets functional safety requirements with safety module
Applicable Industries:
- CNC machines (milling, turning, grinding)
- Packaging machines
- Printing and converting
- Robotics
- Material handling
- Textile machinery
Installation Requirements:
- Mount in control cabinet with adequate ventilation (minimum 100 mm clearance on all sides)
- Use shielded cable for encoder (max 10 m for BiSS; use extender for longer runs)
- Ground motor frame and drive chassis to cabinet ground bar (< 0.1 Ω)
- Input power: 3-phase 200–480 VAC, 50/60 Hz, with line reactor recommended for >480V
- EtherCAT cable: shielded CAT5e/CAT6, max 100 m per segment
Usage Notes:
- Perform Auto-Tune after first installation or motor replacement
- Do not exceed rated current — use thermal monitoring
- Update firmware via Kollmorgen WorkBench software
- Ensure EtherCAT network is properly terminated (120 Ω at each end)
- BiSS encoder requires BiSS-C or BiSS-B protocol — verify encoder compatibility
