COLE HERSEE 48408

Product Name
48408 12 V DC continuous-duty heavy-current solenoid switch
Product Introduction
48408 is a Cole Hersee heavy-duty electromagnetic switch for continuous-duty DC power switching. It is built for vehicle, marine and industrial systems that require sustained high-current control without intermittent-duty overheating.

Detailed content

Technical Specifications
12 V DC coil, 250 A continuous current rating, 500 A momentary inrush rating, 4-pole normally-open main contacts, coil resistance approximately 3.5 to 4.0 Ω, operating temperature -40 to 85°C, zinc-plated steel housing, stud-type main terminals and coil terminals, bolt mounting, ingress protection IP54 depending on orientation.
Functional Features
Continuous-duty coil operation, high-current contact bridging, silver-alloy low-resistance contacts, arc-resistant design, corrosion-resistant housing, stable performance under vibration and temperature cycling.
Application Scenarios
Commercial vehicles, construction equipment, material-handling trucks, marine battery systems, sweepers, hydraulic pump power switching and other DC systems requiring sustained 12 V high-current control.
Performance Parameters
250 A sustained conduction, 500 A short-duration peak, low contact voltage drop with silver-alloy tips, repeated switching cycles under heavy DC load when installed with correct cable and cooling.
Material Composition
Zinc-plated steel enclosure, silver-alloy main contacts, copper coil winding, insulated bobbin, stainless or plated hardware, ceramic/thermoset insulating parts where required.
Structural Features
Stud-mount power terminals, separate coil control studs or terminals, enclosed electromagnetic coil, movable contact bridge, mounting flange or bracket holes, sealed/semi-sealed construction depending on version.
Working Principle
A 12 V DC control current energizes the coil, creates a magnetic field, pulls the contact bridge closed and connects the battery or power source to the load. Removing coil voltage releases the bridge and opens the power circuit.
Installation Requirements
Mount on a rigid metal surface with proper brackets, use cable gauge suitable for 250 A continuous load, torque main studs and coil terminals to specification, keep the solenoid away from exhaust heat sources, provide ventilation for continuous operation.
