B&R D0486 3D0486.6

Product Introduction:
The B&R D0486 (Order Number: 3D0486.6) is a compact, high-performance AC servo drive from the B&R ACOPOS family. It is designed for precise motion control of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and asynchronous motors (AC induction) in single-axis applications. The D0486.6 variant is configured for 400V AC mains supply with a continuous output current of 6A RMS and a peak current capability of 18A for short-duration overloads.

Functional Features:

  • Four control modes: Torque, Velocity, Position, and Electronic Cam — switchable via parameter set
  • Integrated POWERLINK and EtherCAT slave interface for real-time motion control
  • Automatic motor identification — detects motor parameters (resistance, inductance, back-EMF) on first power-up
  • Electronic gear ratio and cam profiling for synchronized multi-axis motion
  • S-curve trajectory generator for jerk-limited motion profiles
  • Integrated safe torque off (STO) per EN 61800-5-2 (SIL3/PLe)
  • Brake chopper with 24V DC output for holding brake release

Structural Characteristics:

  • Wall-mount or DIN rail mounting (TS35)
  • Screw terminals for power (L1/L2/L3, PE), motor (U/V/W), encoder, brake, and I/O
  • Wire size: 1.5 mm² to 6 mm² for power; 0.14 mm² to 1.5 mm² for signal
  • Housing: aluminum die-cast with powder-coated finish for EMI shielding and heat dissipation
  • Integrated heatsink with forced-air cooling fan (internal, maintenance-free)

Working Principle:
The D0486.6 rectifies the 3× 400V AC mains supply to a DC bus (~565V DC). A 3-phase IGBT inverter then synthesizes variable-frequency, variable-voltage AC output to drive the servo motor. The drive uses field-oriented control (FOC / vector control) with a speed PI controller and current PI controller in cascaded loops. Position feedback from the encoder is processed by the position controller to achieve precise trajectory tracking. All control loops execute on a dedicated DSP (Digital Signal Processor) at 16 kHz current loop / 2.5 kHz velocity loop update rates.

Advantages & Highlights:

  • High dynamic response with 2.5 kHz velocity bandwidth — suitable for fast pick-and-place and high-speed machining
  • Automatic motor tuning eliminates manual parameterization
  • SIL3/PLe safe torque off integrated — no external safety relay required
  • Compact footprint (106×132×65 mm) saves cabinet space
  • Multi-protocol communication supports integration into any major PLC/motion controller ecosystem

Applicable Industries:

  • CNC machining centers
  • Injection molding machines
  • Printing and packaging machinery
  • Robot joints (single-axis)
  • Textile machinery
  • Woodworking and glass processing

Installation Requirements:

  • Mount vertically with minimum 100 mm clearance above and 50 mm on sides for airflow
  • Use shielded motor cable (max length: 20 m without output filter, 50 m with output filter)
  • Connect encoder cable as shielded twisted pair, max length 10 m
  • Install MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) 10A, type C on the mains input
  • Ensure protective earth (PE) connection is solid (≤ 0.1Ω)
  • For POWERLINK/EtherCAT: use shielded Ethernet cable (CAT5e STP)

Usage Precautions:

  • Do not operate without a connected motor — the inverter will fault due to open-loop detection
  • Do not exceed 6A continuous current — derating curve applies above 40°C ambient temperature
  • Always connect the brake resistor (if using motor with holding brake) — brake chopper is internal but external resistor may be required for high-inertia loads
  • Perform auto-tuning before first operation — incorrect motor parameters cause instability
  • Do not disconnect the encoder while the drive is in position mode — this triggers an immediate fault
